Gold and XP Farm
Advanced Different design per edition
Produces: Gold nuggets, gold ingots, rotten flesh - and huge amounts of XP
Quick answer: In Java, zombified piglins spawn inside large nether portal frames - build giant portals, funnel the piglins into a kill zone and swing your sword for endless gold and XP. In Bedrock, portals do not spawn piglins; use a zombified piglin platform farm in the nether wastes with a trident killer instead.
How it works
- Java: every active nether portal block can spawn a zombified piglin at light level 11 or lower - bigger portals and more frames mean more spawns. Many designs stack portals above the Nether bedrock ceiling (build limit) for maximum rates.
- Bedrock: zombified piglins spawn naturally throughout the nether wastes; farms use big spawn platforms at low Y with turtle-egg bait or drop chutes, and a trident killer for AFK XP.
- Trident killer (Bedrock + works in Java): pistons push a thrown trident back and forth, killing mobs while crediting you with the kill - full XP while AFK.
Materials
- Java: obsidian for the biggest portal frames you can build (a max portal is 23x23 inside) plus flint and steel
- Collection: turtle egg (bait), magma blocks or fall damage, hoppers and chests
- Looting III sword for manual killing; a trident with Loyalty for a trident killer
- Bedrock variant: ~1000 blocks for spawn platforms and the trident killer (pistons, observers, lever)
Build steps
- Java: build one or more max-size portals in the Nether, ideally on the nether roof (above Y=128) where no other spawns compete.
- Lure or flush piglins to a kill chamber: they path toward turtle eggs and fall into the collection point.
- Kill with a Looting III sword sweep for gold nuggets (craft into ingots) plus XP, or set a trident killer for AFK mode.
- Bedrock: build large platforms in a nether wastes area around Y=30-40, drop the piglins 22+ blocks to a trident killer, and AFK nearby.
- Store the rotten flesh for cleric trading - 32 flesh per emerald turns the byproduct into emeralds.
Rates
Portal-based Java farms are among the fastest XP sources in the game - level 30 in a couple of minutes of swinging, plus chests of gold per hour. Bedrock platform farms are slower but still top-tier XP.
Tips
- Keep anger management in mind: hitting one piglin angers the group, which is exactly what you want at the kill point and nowhere else.
- Gold feeds bartering farms (piglin bartering for pearls, quartz, obsidian) and golden apples/carrots.
- On Java, building on the nether roof requires breaking bedrock or ender-pearling up - check current methods for your version.
