Bee Farm (Honey Farm)
Intermediate Java + Bedrock
Produces: Honey bottles (sugar, food, honey blocks) and honeycombs (beehives, honeycomb blocks, candles)
Quick answer: Bees fill their hive one honey level per pollinated trip; at level 5, shear for honeycombs or bottle for honey - with a campfire smoking underneath, or they swarm you. A dispenser with shears or bottles automates the harvest completely.
How it works
- Each pollinated bee that returns home raises the honey level by 1; at level 5 the hive drips and is ready: shears give 3 honeycombs, a glass bottle gives a honey bottle.
- The anger rule: harvesting by hand angers the bees unless there is fire directly beneath or a lit campfire up to 5 blocks below with the smoke unobstructed; when breaking the hive, only Silk Touch avoids anger. A bee that stings loses its stinger and dies.
- Bees need flowers: plant dense flower beds around the hives so trips stay short - they wander up to 22 blocks, but every block of distance is wasted honey time.
- Bonus income: bees carrying nectar pollinate crops they fly over like bone meal - run the flight path over your carrot and potato fields for free growth boosts.
- Automation: a dispenser holding shears (or glass bottles) facing the hive directly harvests it when powered by redstone, with no player needed.
- Grow the colony: oak, birch or cherry saplings planted within 2 blocks of flowers have a 5% chance to grow a nest with 2-3 bees - flower-lined tree farms double as bee factories.
Materials
- Bees - from natural nests (plains, sunflower plains, flower forests) or your own 5% sapling rolls
- Beehives (3 honeycombs + 6 planks) or relocated nests (Silk Touch at night, with the bees inside)
- A campfire per harvest bay - placed within 5 blocks under the hive
- Flowers, lots of flowers
- Dispensers, shears, glass bottles and a redstone clock for automation
Build steps
- Find bees: plains, sunflower plains and flower forests spawn nests on trees - relocate a nest at night with Silk Touch so the bees travel inside it.
- Or breed your own: flower any two bees and they produce a baby; oak/birch saplings beside flowers roll a 5% nest chance per tree.
- Build the apiary: hives in a row, flower beds on both sides, crops beyond - one campfire beneath each hive.
- Harvest at level 5: shear for 3 honeycombs or bottle for 1 honey bottle; the hive resets to level 0.
- Automate the bay: a dispenser with shears aimed at the hive and a redstone clock; the honeycombs land in a hopper.
- Bottle separately: a second line with glass bottles produces honey bottles for food, sugar and honey blocks.
- Never punch a hive: even an empty one angers the neighborhood - Silk Touch only.
- Craft the goods: honey blocks (sticky pistons that do not stick to slime), honeycomb blocks, candles and beehives for expansion.
Rates
Output depends on the design, the version and how much of it you build, so we do not quote an hourly figure. Build the layout below, time it for a few minutes in your own world and scale from there.
Tips
- Relocate nests at night or in rain: every bee is home, so Silk Touch moves the whole colony in one block.
- Keep wither roses away from bees: they cannot be used to breed them, and feeding one to a bee gives it the Wither effect.
- Leash stragglers home: bees take leads, even angry ones.
- Honey bottles stack to 16 and cure poison - the underrated raid snack.
