Bone Meal Farm (Moss Composter Loop)
Beginner Java + Bedrock
Produces: Bone meal for instant crop growth, tree farming and dye crafting - the farm that feeds your other farms
Quick answer: Bone-meal a moss block sitting in a stone platform: the moss spreads and sprouts vegetation, you hoe it all up, and composting the harvest returns more bone meal than you spent - about 2.5 back per 1 used on a flat 7x7 grid.
How it works
- Bone meal on a moss block converts nearby stone, dirt and similar blocks to moss in a cornerless 7x11x7 volume, and sprouts grass, moss carpet and azaleas on top.
- The loop is net-positive: one bone meal on a flat 7x7 grid of convertible blocks yields about 27 moss blocks on average, which compost into roughly 2.5 bone meal.
- A composter that fills completely drops one bone meal on the next use - leaves, vines, grass and most plant items all feed it.
- Moss mines fastest with a hoe.
- A hopper below a composter pulls the bone meal; a hopper or dropper above pushes items into it.
- A dispenser can apply bone meal for you.
Materials
- 1 moss block (lush caves, or shipwreck and wandering trader supply)
- A platform of stone (or any moss-replaceable block), 7x7 minimum
- A composter (7 slabs) and a chest
- A hoe - diamond or netherite with Efficiency for speed
- A few bone meal to start the loop
Build steps
- Build a flat 7x7 stone platform with a moss block in the center and a composter nearby.
- Use bone meal on the moss: stone turns to moss, vegetation sprouts on top.
- Hoe the whole platform - moss and plants pop instantly.
- Feed everything into the composter: when full it drops bone meal.
- Bank the profit and reinvest one per cycle - the loop runs forever.
- Automate later: a dispenser applies the bone meal, pistons push fresh stone in, hoppers feed the composter.
Rates
Output depends on the design, the version and how much of it you build, so we do not quote an hourly figure. Build the layout below, time it for a few minutes in your own world and scale from there.
Tips
- Keep one bone meal in reserve: the loop only breaks if you spend the last one.
- You cannot compost bamboo, dead bushes, poisonous potatoes, chorus products or golden plant items.
