Dripstone Farm
Intermediate Java + Bedrock
Produces: Pointed dripstone for building and lava farms, plus renewable clay from mud conversion
Quick answer: Pointed dripstone grows on its own when hung under a dripstone block with water above - one growth step every ~5 in-game days. Farm it in rows for unlimited dripstone, and park mud on top of stalactites to convert it into renewable clay.
How it works
- Growth recipe: a pointed dripstone hanging directly under a dripstone block, with a water source above the block (a waterlogged block also works in Java). No water, no growth.
- Growth is slow: each random tick on the stalactite tip has a 1.138% chance to grow it (or the stalagmite below) by one block - about 5 in-game days per step. Stalactites cap at 8 blocks, and stalagmites join from a solid surface less than 11 blocks below.
- It breaks with any tool (a pickaxe is quickest) and instantly from a thrown trident; the tool does not matter for growth.
- The clay trick: mud placed directly above a block with a stalactite underneath converts to clay at 45/256 (~17.6%) per random tick - mud from mangrove swamps plus dripstone equals renewable clay, and it works in any dimension except the Nether.
- A waterlogged tip produces no drip particles; wandering traders may trade 2 pointed dripstone for 1 emerald.
Materials
- Dripstone blocks and a few pointed dripstone starters
- Water buckets (one per column, never consumed)
- Building blocks for the farm frame
- Mud for the clay conversion branch (mangrove swamps)
- Scaffolding for safe harvesting
Build steps
- Raid a dripstone cave for dripstone blocks and pointed dripstone - bring back more than you need.
- Build the rows: dripstone blocks in a line, one water source on top of each, sealed so the water stays put.
- Hang one pointed dripstone under each block - that tip is your permanent seed; never harvest it.
- Wait: on average each growth step takes 5 in-game days (100 minutes).
- Mine the grown segments and leave the tip hanging under the dripstone block so it keeps growing.
- Multiply rows: dozens of columns make the slow per-tip rate irrelevant.
- Run the clay branch: mud blocks on top of a second stalactite array convert to clay over time - harvest with a shovel, no Silk Touch needed.
- Use it for clay or to drip water and lava into cauldrons.
Rates
Each column adds roughly one block of dripstone every 5 in-game days - a 20-column farm outputs a stack of pointed dripstone per in-game week. Mud converts to clay at about one block per 2-3 minutes per stalactite while loaded.
Tips
- Falling stalactites deal damage: never stand under a detached tip.
- Clay conversion does not happen in the Nether: run that branch in the Overworld.
- If you break a stalactite's support, all unsupported blocks below it fall.
