Egg Farm
Beginner Java + Bedrock
Produces: Eggs for cakes, pumpkin pies and chicken population - plus feathers and cooked chicken from the same coop
Quick answer: Fence in chickens on top of hoppers and they lay an egg every 5-10 minutes each, collected automatically. A dispenser firing the eggs at a wall hatches chicks (1 in 8 chance) to grow the next generation.
How it works
- Every adult chicken lays one egg every 5-10 minutes (7.5 minutes average) while the chunk is loaded.
- A thrown egg has a 1/8 chance of spawning a chick; if so, 1/32 of spawning three more (on average 1 in 256 eggs spawns 4 chicks).
- Dispensers throw eggs just like a player.
- There are three egg variants: standard (temperate chicken), brown (warm) and blue (cold).
- Eggs stack to 16 and are an ingredient for cake and pumpkin pie.
Materials
- At least 2 chickens and seeds to breed them
- A fenced pen with hoppers and a chest under the floor
- Optional: dispenser, redstone clock and a slab wall for the auto-hatcher
Build steps
- Lure 2+ chickens into a pen with seeds and breed them up to a dozen or more.
- Replace the pen floor with hoppers feeding a chest - eggs drop straight into storage.
- To hatch by hand, throw eggs at a wall.
- Auto-hatching: a dispenser loaded with eggs and fired by a redstone clock into a chick chamber.
- Scale: more laying hens = more eggs = more chicks - a two-chamber loop (layers over hoppers, hatchery beside) runs forever unattended.
- Cull spare adults for raw chicken and feathers whenever the pen gets crowded.
Rates
Each hen averages 8 eggs per real-time hour (about 1 every 7.5 minutes)Expect roughly 1 chick per 8 eggs thrown; about 1 in 256 eggs pops 4 chicksA 20-hen coop fills a chest with ~160 eggs per hour
Tips
- Warm and cold chickens lay brown and blue eggs: collect all three.
- Thrown eggs knock mobs back but deal no damage, and provoke neutral mobs.
- A fox has a 3% chance to spawn holding an egg.
