Produces: Gold nuggets, gold ingots, rotten flesh - and huge amounts of XP
Quick answer: Zombified piglins spawn from active nether portals in the Overworld on both editions, so a farm builds large portals, collects the piglins that appear and kills them for gold nuggets and XP. The spawn point differs: in Java they appear inside a bottom portal block, in Bedrock one block east or south of the portal.
How it works
- Every random tick, a portal block in the Overworld has a chance to spawn a zombified piglin: 1/2000 on Easy, 1/1000 on Normal and 3/2000 on Hard. More portal blocks mean more spawns. This spawning ignores the mob cap.
- Java: the piglin appears inside one of the bottom portal blocks and cannot use the portal for a preset time. Bedrock: it appears one block east or south of the portal, and portals at negative heights spawn none.
- Zombified piglins also spawn naturally in the Nether, at light level 11 and below.
Materials
- Java: obsidian for the biggest portal frames you can build (a max portal is 23x23 inside) plus flint and steel
- Collection: turtle egg (bait), magma blocks or fall damage, hoppers and chests
- Looting III sword for manual killing; a trident with Loyalty for a trident killer
- Bedrock variant: ~1000 blocks for spawn platforms and the trident killer (pistons, observers, lever)
Build steps
- Build one or more large portals in the Overworld and light them.
- Guide the piglins that spawn into a kill chamber so they cannot wander off.
- Kill them with a Looting sword for gold nuggets (craft into ingots) and XP.
- Store the rotten flesh: clerics buy rotten flesh for emeralds.
Rates
The rate scales with the number of portal blocks and the difficulty. Check your own numbers in game before relying on any figure.
Tips
- Keep anger management in mind: hitting one piglin angers the group, which is exactly what you want at the kill point and nowhere else.
- Gold feeds bartering farms (piglin bartering for pearls, quartz, obsidian) and golden apples/carrots.
- On Java, building on the nether roof requires breaking bedrock or ender-pearling up - check current methods for your version.
