Ice Farm

Beginner Java + Bedrock

Produces: Ice for packed ice and blue ice - fast boat highways and non-melting build blocks

Quick answer: Water source blocks freeze into ice in snowy biomes when open to the sky, dimly lit, and next to a solid block. Dig a shallow pond in the snow, wait with Silk Touch in hand, and harvest sheet after sheet.

How it works

Materials

Build steps

  1. Scout the spot: any snowy biome with open sky works - frozen rivers come pre-dug.
  2. Dig the pond: one block deep, any shape, walled with solid blocks so every water block has a non-water neighbor.
  3. Fill with source blocks: still water only - flowing water does not freeze.
  4. Kill the light: no torches over the water; keep the block light inside below 10.
  5. Stand by: freezing advances on chunk ticks only while a player is close - fish, build or AFK nearby.
  6. Harvest with Silk Touch: break every sheet and the pond refreezes on its own.
  7. Compress: ice to packed ice (9:1) to blue ice (9:1) - 81 ice per blue ice block, and the farm makes it free.
  8. Build a blue ice highway for boats: top speed 72.73 m/s.

Rates

A 10x10 pond refreezes in a few minutes of nearby activity - stacks of ice per session, with blue ice as the slow-but-free long-term output (81 ice per block).
