Mud Farm
Beginner Java + Bedrock
Produces: Unlimited mud for packed mud and mud bricks - and, paired with dripstone, the input for a renewable clay pipeline
Quick answer: Use a water bottle on any dirt block and it becomes mud - you even get the empty bottle back. Point a dispenser loaded with water bottles at a dirt row and the conversion runs itself while you shovel the output.
How it works
- A water bottle (splash and lingering work too) used on dirt, coarse dirt or rooted dirt converts it to mud and returns the glass bottle.
- Players cannot convert through the bottom face of a block, but dispensers can - so dispenser farms face the dirt from any side.
- Mud is slightly shorter than a full block and does not slow movement; hoppers can pull items through it, which simplifies collection designs.
- Mud placed above a block with pointed dripstone hanging underneath converts to clay (~17.6% per random tick, about 6.5 minutes average) - never in the Nether.
- Natural mud carpets mangrove swamps, but shoveling biomes is slower than converting dirt at home.
Materials
- Dirt (a few stacks to start)
- Glass bottles plus a water source to fill them
- Dispenser, redstone clock and hoppers for the automatic version
- A shovel; wheat if you want packed mud on the spot
Build steps
- Fill glass bottles at any water source - each bottle converts exactly one dirt block.
- Manual start: use bottles on dirt rows and shovel the mud; bottles come back empty for refilling.
- Build the converter: a dispenser facing a dirt block, fed with water bottles by hoppers, triggered by a clock; mine the mud and a piston or your own placement feeds fresh dirt.
- Combine with a moss farm or tree farm for infinite dirt, and with a dripstone row to turn the mud straight into clay.
- Craft on demand: mud + wheat = packed mud; 4 packed mud = 4 mud bricks for the full brick family.

1 water bottle = 1 mud block, as fast as you can clickA simple dispenser converter produces thousands per hour, limited only by bottle supply and dirt feedingMud-to-clay conversion adds about 6.5 minutes per block over dripstone - parallel rows scale it linearly
Tips
- Refill bottles in bulk at a water source block - one infinite source covers the whole farm.
- Keep the farm in the Overworld: mud does not dry into clay in the Nether.
- Mud sinks entities slightly without slowing them - safe flooring for animal pens with hopper collection underneath.
