Mushroom Farm
Beginner Java + Bedrock
Produces: Brown and red mushrooms for stew, plus huge mushroom blocks via bone meal
Quick answer: Mushrooms spread on their own in darkness (light 12 or less) and grow into huge mushrooms with bone meal. A dark room with podzol floors multiplies mushrooms forever - no light needed, and podzol lets you light the place freely.
How it works
- Mushrooms plant on podzol, mycelium or nylium at any light level - anywhere else, they need light level 12 or below and pop out of the ground at 13+.
- Spreading: each random tick gives a mushroom a 4% chance to spread to a nearby block (even diagonally up or down) if fewer than 5 of its type sit within a 9x9x3 volume - a dark podzol field self-seeds.
- With bone meal, a mushroom can grow into a huge mushroom if it sits on a valid block (dirt, grass, podzol, mycelium or nylium) and has room; ideally leave a 7x7x8 space so the bone meal never fails.
- Huge mushrooms drop their small mushrooms when their cap blocks break - bone meal one mushroom, chop the giant, and net more than you started with.
- Both colors grow identically - run brown and red rows side by side for stew ingredients and decoration.
Materials
- A few mushrooms of each color (swamps, dark forests, the Nether, mushroom fields)
- Podzol, mycelium or nylium for the floor (any-light farming)
- Bone meal for the huge-mushroom harvest
- An axe for chopping caps
- A dark, enclosed room or cave for the spread field
Build steps
- Pick the room: any enclosed space you can keep dark - or light it normally and floor it with podzol or nylium so light stops mattering.
- Plant a starter grid: one mushroom every few blocks of each color, keeping types separated by the 9x9x3 density cap.
- Let them spread: 4% per random tick per mushroom fills the field over a few in-game days.
- Harvest waves: pick everything but a starter or two per section, and the field reseeds itself.
- Run the giant harvest: bone meal a mushroom on a valid block with room above; a huge mushroom gives at least 20 mushrooms when harvested.
- Leave space: a bone meal can fail if the huge mushroom has no room to grow.
- Craft the output: mushroom stew (bowl + red + brown), fermented spider eyes from brown mushrooms, and suspicious stew variants.
- Stockpile cap blocks with Silk Touch for building - mushroom stems and caps are gorgeous structure blocks.
Rates
A dark podzol room of 50+ mushrooms yields several stacks per in-game day of passive spreading; one bone-mealed giant mushroom returns roughly a stack of small mushrooms with an axe sweep.
Tips
- Podzol is the farmer's friend: it lets you light the farm to stop hostile mobs while mushrooms keep spreading.
- Separate colors by at least 9 blocks or they share the 5-per-9x9x3 density cap and slow each other down.
- A brown mushroom emits light level 1, which stops most hostile spawns (current versions need block light 0); soul torches (light 10) also work for mushrooms.
- A mooshroom is the deluxe version: shear it for 5 mushrooms and it becomes a cow, or milk it with a bowl for infinite stew.
