Sweet Berry Farm
Beginner Java + Bedrock
Produces: Sweet berries - quick food, fox breeding fuel and a defensive hedge that damages mobs
Quick answer: Plant sweet berries on grass or dirt and they grow through 4 stages on their own. Pick a mature bush with use (not break) to take 2-3 berries while the bush stays planted and regrows - or let a fox harvest for you.
How it works
- Bushes plant on grass, dirt, coarse dirt, rooted dirt, farmland, podzol, mycelium, moss, mud or muddy mangrove roots, and grow through 4 stages with a 20% chance per random tick; the block above needs light level 9 or higher.
- Harvest with use: a mature bush drops 2-3 berries and reverts to stage 2; stage 3 gives 1-2. Breaking gives the same and Fortune adds 1 per level, but you lose the plant.
- Bees pollinate bushes and advance them one growth stage.
- Foxes breed on sweet berries and are immune to bushes.
- Moving through a bush slows entities and deals 1 damage (once per half-second) only if you move; it cancels fall damage.
- Bushes generate naturally in taiga and snowy taiga biomes.
Materials
- Sweet berries to start - bushes generate in patches in taiga, snowy taiga and old growth taiga biomes (and in abandoned camps)
- Grass or dirt rows, plus light sources (light 10+ above the bush for natural growth)
- Optional automation: a fox, dispensers with bone meal, or hopper minecarts for collection
- Optional: a beehive with bees to pollinate the rows
Build steps
- Find a taiga-family biome and harvest a few bushes by hand - every berry is a seed.
- Plant rows with one block of air above each bush and make sure the light is 9 or higher.
- Harvest with the use key only: right-click strips the berries and leaves a stage-2 bush that regrows in minutes.
- Speed it up with bees nearby or bone meal by hand.
- Always harvest with the use key to keep the plant.
- A berry hedge damages and slows almost everything crossing it, except foxes.
Rates
A mature bush gives 2-3 berries per use and regrows from stage 2 within minutes; a lit double row of 40 bushes hand-picked each cycle out-eats most starter food sources.
Tips
- Each berry restores 2 hunger; in a composter they have a 30% chance to raise the level.
- Feed two foxes sweet berries to breed them; the baby trusts you.
- Mobs at standard height in a minecart take no damage crossing bushes.
