Witch Farm
Intermediate Different design per edition
Produces: Gunpowder, glowstone dust, redstone, glass bottles, sticks, sugar and spider eyes (4-8 items per witch)
Quick answer: A witch hut is the only place witches spawn on demand: in Java, witches spawn inside the hut's bounding box at low light, so you floor the whole box, funnel witches to a kill spot and loot their potion ingredients. Bedrock hut rates are much lower - raid farms beat them there.
How it works
- Java Edition: witches spawn anywhere inside the hut's bounding box (a 7x7x4-ish volume) when the light level is 0. Removing the hut's blocks does not remove the spawn zone - the bounding box is what matters.
- Java: witches count toward the hostile mob cap, so lighting every cave and surface within 128 blocks of the farm massively boosts rates.
- Bedrock Edition: witches spawn only on the hut floor itself at low rates. Most Bedrock players get witch drops from raid farms instead.
- Witches drink healing, fire resistance and water breathing potions mid-fight - kill them fast or by suffocation/fall damage so drops are guaranteed.
Materials
- Slabs and solid blocks to cover the bounding box with spawning floors
- Water buckets for collection streams
- Hoppers and chests
- Torches or glow lichen to light the surroundings
- Building blocks for the AFK platform
Build steps
- Find a witch hut in a swamp biome (/locate structure minecraft:swamp_hut).
- Java: demolish the hut and build 2-3 spawning floors inside the bounding box, with water channels pushing witches off the edge into a drop or killing chamber.
- Java: light every cave and surface within 128 blocks - this step decides your rates.
- Build an AFK spot ~120 blocks above the swamp so only the farm's floors are in spawning range.
- Collect at the chests: gunpowder for rockets, glowstone and redstone for brewing, bottles for honey and potion work.
Rates
A good Java perimeter-lit witch farm produces 1,000+ witch drops per hour. Unlit single-hut farms give a trickle. Bedrock huts are barely worth farming - use raids.
Tips
- The bounding box survives demolishing the hut: use a tool like Chunkbase with your seed to see it exactly.
- Triple-hut seeds (three huts in range of one AFK spot) triple the output - hunt one if you are starting a long-term world.
- Cats from the hut keep spawning as pets - free creeper repellent.
