Wither Skeleton Farm
Advanced Java + Bedrock
Produces: Wither skeleton skulls (2.5% per kill, up to 5.5% with Looting III in Java / 8.5% in Bedrock), bones and coal
Quick answer: Wither skeletons spawn only in nether fortresses. A farm strips the fortress down to spawning platforms, carpets it with wither roses - where only wither skeletons can spawn - and funnels them to a kill zone for skulls, the key to summoning the wither.
How it works
- Wither skeletons spawn in nether fortresses at light level 0-7: on nether bricks anywhere in the fortress's outer bounding box, and on any block inside each structure piece's own box.
- They are the only mobs that can spawn on wither roses (immune to the wither effect) - covering every spawning block in roses makes the farm spawn wither skeletons exclusively.
- They are 2.4 blocks tall, so they need 3 blocks of clearance - 2-block ceilings elsewhere suppress them, which is how designs concentrate spawns.
- Skulls only drop from player kills: 2.5% base, +1% per Looting level in Java (5.5% at Looting III) and +2% in Bedrock (8.5% at Looting III). Charged creeper explosions also drop skulls.
- Spawn-proofing matters as much as the farm: every other fortress mob (blazes, zombified piglins, magma cubes) competes for the mob cap, so slab or rose everything nearby.
Materials
- A nether fortress - ideally where several structure pieces overlap (intersections multiply spawn spaces)
- Hundreds of wither roses (farm them with a simple wither cage setup, or use slab spawn-proofing instead)
- Building blocks, slabs and glass for platforms and spawn-proofing
- A sword with Looting III, and ideally Smite (wither skeletons are undead)
Build steps
- Scout a fortress: the best spots are intersections where two or more structure bounding boxes overlap - more bounding box means more spawn attempts.
- Clear the space: strip towers, blaze spawners and decoration down to flat nether brick platforms inside the bounding boxes.
- Spawn-proof everything else: slab, button or glass every block within 128 blocks that is not part of your farm - netherrack plains, other fortress corridors, all of it.
- Choose the rose method or the height method: wither roses on the platforms allow only wither skeletons, while 2-block ceilings everywhere except your platforms do the same job for free.
- Build the funnel: open edges or water-free push systems (no water in the Nether - use trapdoors, turtle eggs or open drops) herd skeletons to one kill point.
- Kill by hand with Looting III: every skull run averages one skull per 18 kills in Java, one per 12 in Bedrock.
- Bring fire resistance: the fortress blazes stay dangerous while you work.
- Scale up: clear more bounding box, add platforms, and rates climb - three skulls means a wither on demand, and beacons follow.
Rates
A basic single-intersection farm with Looting III gives a skull every few minutes of active killing; fully cleared Java designs with wither roses produce skulls fast enough to make beacons a renewable resource. Coal and bones pile up for free.
Tips
- Skulls only drop from player kills (or a charged creeper explosion, which always gives one).
- Their Wither effect ignores armor; milk removes it, but do not get surrounded.
- Kill some blazes while you are there: you will want the rods for brewing stands and eyes of ender anyway.
- A charged creeper kill guarantees the skull - some players trap one as a skull insurance policy.
