Best Axe Enchantments in Minecraft
Guide Java Bedrock
What you need
- An enchanting table with 15 bookshelves, or an anvil plus enchanted books
- Lapis and XP levels
- A diamond or netherite axe
Step by step
- Sharpness V is an option for combat: Java diamond and netherite axes have higher damage per hit than matching swords, but lower attack speed and no sweep attack.
- Efficiency V speeds up breaking wood with the axe. Stripping a log is a separate use action, not mining, so Efficiency does not make that action faster.
- Mending + Unbreaking III reduce repair work. Collect XP while holding the damaged axe and watch its durability; neither enchantment makes it unbreakable.
- Fortune III: more drops from leaves (saplings, apples) and melons - worth it on a wood-farm axe.
- Silk Touch (alternative): harvests beehives with bees inside, bookshelves and glass - conflicts with Fortune, pick per axe.
- Combat note (Java): an axe can disable a raised shield. This is different from sword sweeping; an axe has no sweep attack.
- Combat note (Bedrock): swords out-damage axes - enchant the axe as a pure tool there.
- Anvil order matters: combine books with each other first (two I make II, two II make III), then apply the cheapest books to the item first. Every anvil job on an item raises its prior-work penalty, and once a single job would cost more than 39 levels the anvil refuses with 'Too Expensive!' - so build books before touching the item.

Java vs Bedrock
Java axes have high damage per hit but slower attack speed than swords. Bedrock combat differs, and swords are normally the stronger dedicated melee choice. Choose the axe enchantments for your intended mining or combat use, rather than assuming one build fits both editions.

Frequently asked questions
Axe or sword for combat?
Java: an axe offers high damage per hit and can disable raised shields; a sword attacks faster and can sweep. In Bedrock, a sword is normally the stronger dedicated melee choice.
Does Fortune work on logs?
No - logs always drop one per block. Fortune on an axe is for leaves (more saplings and apples), melons and glowstone-style blocks, not wood.
