Best Sword Enchantments in Minecraft (Ranked)
Guide Java Bedrock
What you need
- An enchanting table with 15 bookshelves, or an anvil plus enchanted books
- Lapis and XP levels
- A diamond or netherite sword
Step by step
- Sharpness V: the main damage enchant, +3 HP at max level in Java. Most weapon tiers only roll up to IV at the table - combine two IV books for V. Conflicts with Smite and Bane of Arthropods - keep those for specialist backup swords.
- Looting III: more drops from mobs - wither skulls, ender pearls and gunpowder farming all get faster. Always on the main sword.
- Mending: collected XP repairs the sword while you hold it. With Unbreaking III it lasts a very long time, but it is not unbreakable - no XP means no repairs.
- Unbreaking III: quadruples effective durability on average.
- Fire Aspect II: sets targets on fire - free damage over time and cooked meat from animals. Some players skip it because burning mobs set you on fire in melee.
- Sweeping Edge III (Java only): boosts the sweep attack's damage - the best crowd-control option for mob farms.
- Knockback II: optional. Great against creepers, annoying when chasing mobs - many players leave it off.
- Getting them: enchant books at the table, combine on an anvil, or buy the exact books from librarian villagers.
- Anvil order matters: combine books with each other first (two I make II, two II make III), then apply the cheapest books to the item first. Every anvil job on an item raises its prior-work penalty, and once a single job would cost more than 39 levels the anvil refuses with 'Too Expensive!' - so build books before touching the item.

Java vs Bedrock
Sweeping Edge and the sword sweep attack are Java-only. Sharpness damage also differs: Java uses 0.5 × level + 0.5, while Bedrock uses 1.25 × level rounded down. Do not assume equal sword damage across editions.
Versions: Describes the current Java and Bedrock releases. See the edition note for differences.
Frequently asked questions
Sharpness or Smite?
Sharpness for your main sword - it works on everything. Smite V out-damages it against undead (zombies, skeletons, the Wither), so make a second Smite sword for the Wither fight.
Is Fire Aspect worth it?
For hunting food, yes - animals drop cooked meat. For general combat it is preference: burning mobs can touch you with fire in close fights.
