How to Back Up Your Minecraft World

Guide Java Bedrock

Quick answer: Your world is a folder: Java keeps it in .minecraft/saves, Bedrock in the com.mojang/minecraftWorlds folder. Copy the world folder somewhere safe and you have a full backup - restore by copying it back. Do it before updates, mods and experiments.

What you need

Step by step

  1. Java (Windows): press Win+R, type %appdata%\.minecraft\saves and hit Enter. Each folder there is one world.
  2. Java (Mac/Linux): saves live in ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/saves (Mac) and ~/.minecraft/saves (Linux).
  3. Bedrock (Windows): worlds are in %localappdata%\Packages\Microsoft.MinecraftUWP_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalState\games\com.mojang\minecraftWorlds.
  4. Bedrock (mobile): on Android the same com.mojang folder lives in internal storage (games/com.mojang/minecraftWorlds) if the game is set to External/Application storage; iOS keeps it inside the app's files - use the Files app.
  5. Close the game, then copy the whole world folder to your backup spot. Copying while playing can corrupt the copy.
  6. To restore: put the folder back where it came from and restart the game. The world appears in the list with its original name.
  7. Habit: back up before big updates, before adding or removing mods (Java), and monthly in general. Servers: copy the world folder while the server is stopped.

Java vs Bedrock

Java worlds and Bedrock worlds are not interchangeable - a backup can only be restored to the same edition.

Versions: Folder locations are current for the official launcher and Bedrock installs. Third-party launchers keep their own instance folders with a saves directory inside.

Frequently asked questions

Can I move a world from Java to Bedrock?

Not directly - the formats differ. Community converters exist, but they are unofficial and lossy; keep backups in their original edition.

My world disappeared - is the backup enough?

If the folder still exists in saves, the world is there - the list sometimes hides worlds after version issues. If the folder is gone, only a real backup copy (or file-recovery tools) can bring it back.

How big are world folders?

Fresh worlds are a few MB; long-played worlds with lots of exploring reach hundreds of MB to several GB. Check size before picking a cloud plan, but any USB stick handles most worlds.
