How to Build a Medieval House in Minecraft

Guide Java Bedrock

Quick answer: Medieval timber-frame recipe: stone foundation, white walls (white concrete or plaster), a dark oak beam frame on the outside, a steep spruce roof, and an overhanging upper floor. A 9x11 footprint with two floors is the classic village house.

What you need

Step by step

  1. Foundation: a 9x11 ring of cobblestone or stone bricks, one block high - medieval houses sit on stone.
  2. Frame first: dark oak log pillars at the corners and every 3-4 blocks along the walls, then horizontal dark oak beams at floor heights.
  3. Fill the walls between the frame with white concrete. The dark beams on white walls ARE the medieval look.
  4. Second floor overhang: build the upper floor one block wider on every side, supported by dark oak stairs upside-down under the edge.
  5. Steep roof: spruce stairs climbing at 45 degrees or steeper, slab ridge on top. Medieval roofs are tall - at least as tall as one floor.
  6. Details: flower boxes under windows (trapdoors + flowers), a stone chimney with a campfire inside for real smoke, a wooden door with a lantern beside it.
  7. Interior: wooden floors, a hearth corner with the campfire chimney, beds upstairs, storage downstairs.
  8. Group three or four of these around a well and you have a village.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a house look medieval?

Three things: the visible dark frame on white walls, the steep roof, and the overhanging upper floor. Get those right and any materials pass.

No dark oak nearby?

Spruce logs work for the frame and normal oak for the roof - the contrast matters more than the species.
