How to Change the Time in Minecraft
Guide Java Bedrock
Quick answer: Run /time set day (or noon, night, midnight) with cheats on. /time set 1000 uses exact ticks. In Java, stop the day-night cycle with /gamerule advance_time false.
What you need
- Cheats enabled (Java: Open to LAN trick works)
- Nothing else - one command
Step by step
- Open chat (T) and run /time set day - the sun jumps to morning.
- Other presets: /time set noon (tick 6000, sun overhead), /time set night (tick 13000, monsters spawn) and /time set midnight (tick 18000). In Bedrock you can also use sunrise (23000) and sunset (12000).
- Exact control: /time set 1000 sets tick 1000, which is the same as day. A full Minecraft day is 24000 ticks (20 real minutes).
- Move time forward without jumping: /time add 6000 adds that many ticks.
- Freeze time: /gamerule advance_time false (Java) stops the daylight cycle until you set it back to true. Combined with /time set day you get permanent daylight.
- Check the current time with /time query daytime.
Java vs Bedrock
Both editions use /time set, /time add and /time query. The presets differ: sunrise and sunset exist only in Bedrock, and in Java /time set always sets the daylight cycle time directly.
Versions: Time commands and advance_time work the same in all current Java and Bedrock versions.
Frequently asked questions
How long is a Minecraft day?
20 real minutes, which is 24000 game ticks. Roughly 10 minutes of that is daytime and about 7 minutes is night, with dusk and dawn in between.
Can I skip the night without cheats?
Yes - sleep in a bed. On multiplayer servers, all players (or a set percentage) must sleep at once.
