How to Change Your Minecraft Skin (Java and Bedrock)
Guide Java Bedrock
What you need
- A skin PNG file (64x64, or 64x32 classic format)
- Access to your Minecraft account
- The right model choice: Classic or Slim arms
Step by step
- Get a skin: download one from a skin site, make your own in an editor, or use our Skins gallery for ideas. Save the PNG.
- Java, method 1: sign in at minecraft.net, open Profile > Skin, choose Classic or Slim model, upload the PNG and save. It applies to your account immediately.
- Java, method 2: open the Minecraft Launcher > Skins tab > New Skin, pick the model and browse to your PNG.
- Bedrock: launch the game, open Dressing Room on the main menu, pick a skin you own or import your own PNG (import works on Windows, mobile and most platforms; consoles are more limited).
- Pick the right model: a Slim PNG on the Classic model shows black patches on the arms - if your skin looks wrong, switch models first.
- Your skin follows your account: every device and server where you log in shows the new skin. No restart needed beyond relogging.
- Keep a small library: the launcher (Java) and Dressing Room (Bedrock) both store multiple skins so you can swap whenever you like.
Java vs Bedrock
Java skins are account-wide PNG uploads. Bedrock skins live in the Dressing Room and can include marketplace items - some of those cost Minecoins, but classic skin import is free.
Versions: Skin uploading applies to current Minecraft on both editions. The Slim (3px arm) model exists since Java 1.8.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my skin have black or broken arms?
Model mismatch: you uploaded a Slim (3-pixel arms) skin as Classic (4-pixel), or the reverse. Change the model at upload time and it fixes itself.
Can I use a custom skin on Bedrock consoles?
Console Bedrock (PlayStation, Xbox, Switch) does not allow PNG imports - you choose from Dressing Room items there. Windows and mobile Bedrock do allow importing your own PNG.
Do other players see my skin?
Yes, on any online server - everyone sees the skin tied to your account. In offline or cracked environments skins often fail to load, which is a server-side issue, not yours.
