How to Find the Deep Dark in Minecraft

Guide Java Bedrock

Quick answer: The deep dark is a sculk-covered cave biome in the deepslate layer, usually under mountains (jagged, frozen and stony peaks are your best bet). Dig down to around Y=-52 beneath a big mountain and branch-mine - the floor turning to sculk means you found it. No normal mobs spawn there; the danger is the warden.

What you need

Step by step

  1. Pick the right surface: the deep dark favors low-erosion regions, which in practice means BIG mountains. Frozen peaks, jagged peaks and stony peaks are the classic markers; it can appear under other terrain too, but mountains are the reliable hunt.
  2. Descend into the deepslate layer: the biome lives down around Y=-52 and below, occasionally reaching higher under tall mountains. Staircase down - never dig straight.
  3. Watch for the floor change: grey sculk patches with glowing sculk veins, sculk sensors and shriekers mean you have arrived. The biome is almost lightless - no glow lichen, just catalysts and lava glow.
  4. Notice the silence: no regular hostile mobs spawn in the deep dark. The only spawns are wardens (from shriekers) plus the odd monster room mob. Quiet does not mean safe.
  5. Sneak from here: sculk sensors hear your footsteps. Crouch everywhere, carpet or wool your path, and never set off a sculk shrieker three times - that summons the warden.
  6. Loot the prize: the deep dark is the ONLY biome where ancient cities generate. Follow the sculk and you will often find one nearby - see our ancient city guide for the loot runs.

Java vs Bedrock

Same generation and mechanics in Java and Bedrock.

Versions: Added in Java 1.19 and Bedrock 1.19.0 (The Wild Update, 2022) together with ancient cities, sculk and the warden.

Frequently asked questions

What Y level is the deep dark?

It generates in the deepslate layer, most commonly around Y=-52 and deeper, though under very tall mountains it can reach up into the stone layer.

Is the deep dark only under mountains?

Most often, yes - it favors low-erosion regions, which usually means mountain ranges. It can generate under other biomes too; mountains are just the reliable way to hunt it.

Do mobs spawn in the deep dark?

No regular mob spawning happens there at all. The only threats are the warden summoned by sculk shriekers and mobs from monster rooms that overlap the biome.
