How to Find Diamonds in Minecraft

Guide Java Bedrock

Quick answer: Diamond ore generates in the Overworld from Y=16 down to Y=-63 and gets more common the lower you go. Deepslate diamond ore is most common at Y=-58 and Y=-59. Mine it with an iron pickaxe or better; it drops 1 diamond and 3-7 XP.

What you need

Step by step

  1. Craft an iron pickaxe or better: diamond ore needs it to drop anything useful.
  2. Dig down to around Y=-58 or Y=-59, where deepslate diamond ore is most common. Check your Y level with coordinates (F3 in Java).
  3. Branch mine through stone and deepslate to expose as many blocks as you can.
  4. Look near aquifers and lava: ore does not get a reduced chance to generate when exposed to water or lava, so it appears more often on aquifer walls. Some ore blocks have a chance not to generate when next to air.
  5. Mine with an iron, diamond or netherite pickaxe. Without Silk Touch or Fortune, an ore block drops 1 diamond and 3-7 XP. Fortune I averages 1.33 diamonds, Fortune II 1.75 and Fortune III 2.2; these are averages, not guaranteed drops from each block.
  6. Silk Touch on an iron, diamond or netherite pickaxe drops the ore block instead of diamonds and XP. Save the ore to mine later with Fortune if you want more diamonds.

Java vs Bedrock

Both editions require an iron, diamond or netherite pickaxe to collect diamond ore or its drops. Silk Touch collects the ore block; Fortune increases diamond drops when mining without Silk Touch.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Y level for diamonds?

Around Y=-58 to Y=-59, where deepslate diamond ore is most common.

Do diamonds spawn more near lava?

Ore is not less likely to generate when exposed to water or lava, so it shows more on the walls of aquifers. Ore touching air has a chance not to generate.

How much does Fortune give?

Fortune I averages 1.33 diamonds, Fortune II 1.75 and Fortune III 2.2.

What tool do I need?

An iron, diamond or netherite pickaxe. A wooden, stone, copper or golden pickaxe does not drop diamonds or the ore block.
