How to Find a Dungeon (Monster Room) in Minecraft

Guide Java Bedrock

Quick answer: Dungeons - officially monster rooms - are small cobblestone rooms underground with a zombie, skeleton or spider spawner and up to two loot chests. Saddles, name tags and music discs hide inside.

What you need

Step by step

  1. Dig anywhere in the Overworld: monster rooms generate underground in every biome - each chunk makes fourteen generation attempts between Y 0-320 and Y -58 to -1.
  2. Listen for mob echoes: a chorus of the same mob sounds from one spot underground usually means a spawner - zombie, skeleton or spider.
  3. Cave into them: monster rooms always generate connected to carver caves, canyons, mineshafts and strongholds, so spelunking finds them faster than branch mining.
  4. Spot the mossy cobblestone: the floor mixes cobblestone with 75% mossy cobblestone - natural mossy cobble only appears here and in a handful of structures.
  5. Secure the spawner: torch the spawner (or stand within range so nothing spawns) before looting - the room keeps producing mobs until you disable it.
  6. Loot the chests: up to two chests hold saddles, buckets, gunpowder, string, bread, iron ingots, redstone, golden apples and the 13 and cat music discs - some of the few disc sources in the game.
  7. Convert it to a farm: a zombie or skeleton spawner plus water streams makes a classic XP and drops farm - never break a spawner you might want later.
  8. Mind the quirks: rarely a room generates with no chest or even no spawner, and sometimes the two chests merge into a double chest.

Java vs Bedrock

Generation and loot match across editions. In Bedrock, zombie spawners can also produce zombie villagers (5% of spawns), handy for curing setups.

Versions: One of the oldest generated features in Minecraft - added in Infdev on June 25, 2010, with saddles and golden apples in the chests from day one and music discs arriving in Alpha.
