How to Get the Bolt Armor Trim in Minecraft

Guide Java Bedrock

Quick answer: Bolt armor trim smithing templates drop from standard vaults and chests in trial chambers. Once you have one, duplicate it with 7 diamonds + a copper block, then apply it at a smithing table with any armor piece and a trim material.

What you need

Trial keys from defeated trial spawners
7 diamonds + 1 copper block per duplication
A smithing table, armor piece and trim material

Step by step

Find trial chambers and earn trial keys from the trial spawners - each spawner you defeat has a chance to eject a key.
Open standard vaults: the bolt armor trim is a vault and chest drop inside trial chambers. More chambers, more vaults, better odds.
Duplicate your first template immediately: 7 diamonds + 1 block of copper (waxed works too) + the template crafts 2 templates - never risk your only copy.
Apply it at a smithing table: template + any armor piece + any trim material (iron, gold, diamond, emerald, lapis, redstone, quartz, amethyst, netherite or copper).
Pick your colors: the trim material sets the color - diamond blue, gold yellow, redstone red - over the bolt pattern's lightning lines.
Want the rarer sibling? Flow armor trim comes from OMINOUS vaults, which need ominous trial keys from ominous trial spawners - see our bad omen guide.

Java vs Bedrock

Identical loot sources and recipes in Java and Bedrock.

Versions: Added in Java 1.21 and Bedrock 1.21.0 (Tricky Trials, 2024) alongside the flow armor trim.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between bolt and flow armor trims?

Both are trial chambers trims. Bolt comes from standard vaults and chests; flow only comes from ominous vaults behind ominous trial keys, making flow the rarer flex.

Can you duplicate armor trims?

Yes - every smithing template duplicates with 7 diamonds plus its theme block. For bolt that block is copper, so stock up on both.

Do armor trims change stats?

No - trims are purely cosmetic. The bolt trim adds lightning-styled lines in whatever material color you choose.
