How to Get Luck of the Sea in Minecraft
Guide Java Bedrock
What you need
- Fishing rod (3 sticks + 2 string)
- Enchanting table, or anvil + Luck of the Sea book
- XP levels
- Water for fishing; Java treasure needs the open-water volume described below
Step by step
- Craft a fishing rod. Three sticks and two string - spiders at night supply the string.
- Enchant it. An enchanting table can roll Luck of the Sea directly on the rod, or use an anvil with a book from a librarian, a loot chest, or - fittingly - from fishing up treasure with a plain rod.
- Java treasure requires a qualifying 5×4×5 volume around the bobber: layers of water sources or non-colliding waterlogged blocks below, and air/lily pads above. No flowing water or obstructing solids in that volume. A three-block-deep pool helps keep the check valid as the bobber dips. Direct sky affects speed, not a separate treasure requirement. Bedrock has no open-water treasure check.
- Default category odds at III are about 84.54% fish, 4.12% junk and 11.34% treasure per successful catch. Lure changes waiting time, not these category odds.
- Treasure includes books, name tags, saddles, nautilus shells, enchanted bows and rods. Fishing books exclude Soul Speed, Swift Sneak and Wind Burst. Lure speeds up attempts but does not guarantee a fixed doubling of catch speed.
Java vs Bedrock
Both editions share the default category chances, but individual treasure weights differ. Java requires open water; Bedrock does not. Luck of the Sea and Lure are compatible, improving loot odds and wait time separately.

Frequently asked questions
Luck of the Sea or Lure?
Both, on the same rod - they are compatible. Lure cuts the wait between bites, Luck of the Sea upgrades what each catch is. A Lure III + Luck of the Sea III + Mending rod is the classic fishing endgame.
Can I fish up Mending with it?
Yes. Mending can appear on fishing treasure books. Soul Speed, Swift Sneak and Wind Burst cannot. It is random, and Java also requires qualifying open water for a treasure catch.
Why am I only catching fish, no treasure?
In Java, check the open-water volume around the bobber; invalid water still allows fish and junk, not treasure. Bedrock does not use that rule. Even in valid water, treasure is random and dry spells are possible.
