How to Get and Farm Potatoes in Minecraft
Guide Java Bedrock
Quick answer: Find potatoes in village farm plots or as a rare zombie drop (about 0.83% per kill), then plant one on farmland. A fully grown crop drops 2 to 5 potatoes (3 5/7 on average) and has a 2% chance of an extra poisonous potato. Fortune III raises the average to 5 3/7.
What you need
- Hoe and farmland
- Bone meal (optional)
Step by step
- Find potatoes in a village farm plot, or kill zombies, husks or zombie villagers: each has a 2.5% chance to drop an iron ingot, carrot or potato, so about 1/120 (0.83%) for a potato.
- Add Looting for better odds: 1.17% with Looting I, 1.50% with II.
- Plant a potato on farmland.
- Use bone meal to bring the crop to its last stage of growth.
- Harvest a fully grown crop: 2 drops are guaranteed, then three attempts at 57.14% each give 0 to 3 extra. There is a 2% chance of a poisonous potato too.
- Use a Fortune tool to add one more attempt per level. Fortune III averages 5 3/7 potatoes.
- Cook potatoes into baked potatoes.
