How to Get Protection in Minecraft (Protection IV)

Guide Java Bedrock

Quick answer: Protection goes on armor from the enchanting table, librarian trades, fishing, or structure loot. Protection IV is the max: each piece reduces damage by 4% per level, so a full Protection IV set cuts 64% of almost all damage - and it can't mix with Blast, Fire or Projectile Protection.

What you need

Step by step

  1. Enchant armor pieces: at a level-30 enchanting table, diamond or netherite armor can roll Protection IV directly. Helmets, chestplates, leggings and boots all accept it.
  2. Trade with librarians: reroll lecterns until a Protection book appears - the reliable targeted route, especially for that fourth level.
  3. Fish, loot and raid: enchanted books from fishing, monster room chests and non-village structure loot can carry Protection; Bedrock raid mobs drop books; some mob-dropped armor comes pre-enchanted.
  4. Combine matching levels below the maximum on an anvil: I + I = II, II + II = III, III + III = IV. Compare book and gear combinations rather than assuming all books should be merged into one first.
  5. Understand the math: each level is 4% damage reduction per piece - Protection IV is 16% per piece, 64% on a full set, applied AFTER armor's own reduction. The game caps total enchantment reduction at 80%.
  6. The four Protection types conflict on the same armor piece, not across the whole set. An incompatible book cannot replace the existing protection type automatically; inspect the anvil preview. Protection does not reduce starvation, void damage or a Warden's sonic boom.
  7. Pick your setup: generalists run full Protection IV. Bring a Fire Protection piece for Nether trips and a Blast Protection piece for the Ender Dragon fight - swap situationally instead of compromising.

Java vs Bedrock

Since Bedrock 1.18.30 both editions use the same formula: 4% per level, linear. Before that, Bedrock used 5% per level - old Bedrock worlds were noticeably tankier. Sources match too, except Bedrock raid mobs dropping enchanted books.

Frequently asked questions

Is Protection IV the best armor enchantment?

For general use, yes: a full Protection IV set reduces almost all damage by 64% after armor. The specialized protections (Blast, Fire, Projectile) reach the 80% cap against their damage type, but only protect against that one thing.

Can you combine Protection and Fire Protection?

Not on the same piece in normal Survival. The anvil does not automatically delete Protection to replace it with Fire Protection. Different armor pieces may use different types; review the preview before spending XP.

What is the fastest way to get Protection IV?

A librarian trade: place and break a lectern until the librarian offers Protection (any level), lock it, then merge books up to IV in an anvil. Enchanting tables can also roll Prot IV directly at level 30.
