How to Get Sweet Berries in Minecraft

Guide Java Bedrock

Quick answer: Find sweet berry bushes in taiga, snowy taiga, old growth pine taiga and old growth spruce taiga biomes, then right-click a ripe bush for 1-2 berries (2-3 when fully grown). Plant the berries on grass, dirt or similar blocks to farm them. Each one restores 2 hunger points.

What you need

Step by step

  1. Go to a taiga biome. Berry bushes generate in taiga and snowy taiga, and also in old growth pine taiga and old growth spruce taiga. Each chunk has a 1 in 12 chance to generate patches of bushes.
  2. Right-click a bush that shows berries. You get 1-2 berries from the third growth stage and 2-3 from the final stage, and the bush drops back to its second stage so it can regrow.
  3. Or break the bush with any tool or your hand: a mature bush gives 2-3 berries, and each Fortune level can add 1 more.
  4. Check taiga village houses too. Taiga house chests hold 1-7 sweet berries (about 40.6% of those chests).
  5. Plant berries on grass block, dirt, coarse dirt, rooted dirt, podzol, mycelium, moss block, mud, farmland or muddy mangrove roots. The bush has four growth stages and needs light level 9 or higher to grow.
  6. Keep a full block off the top of the bush, since it cannot grow with a solid block directly above it.
  7. Eat berries to restore 2 hunger points, or feed them to foxes to breed them.

Java vs Bedrock

Eating a berry restores 2 hunger points in both editions. Saturation is 0.4 in Java Edition and 1.2 in Bedrock Edition. Bushes slow down and damage players and most mobs that move through them.

Versions: Sweet berries and the bushes work the same in current Java and Bedrock versions apart from the saturation difference.
