How to Get a Torchflower in Minecraft (1.20)

Guide Java Bedrock

Quick answer: Torchflowers come from torchflower seeds, which only a sniffer can dig up. Plant the seeds on farmland, grow the crop and harvest it - the flower crafts into orange dye and breeds sniffers.

What you need

Step by step

  1. Get a sniffer first: brush suspicious sand in warm ocean ruins for a sniffer egg, hatch it on moss and raise the snifflet.
  2. Let the sniffer dig: adult sniffers periodically dig the ground and unearth torchflower seeds (and pitcher pods).
  3. Plant the seeds on farmland: till dirt with a hoe, plant the torchflower seeds and wait - or speed it up with bone meal on the crop.
  4. Harvest the crop: a fully grown torchflower crop drops one torchflower - note that bone meal cannot duplicate the flower itself.
  5. Breed more sniffers: feed torchflower seeds to two sniffers and they produce a sniffer egg - your seed supply grows with your herd.
  6. Craft orange dye: each torchflower crafts into orange dye.
  7. Brew suspicious stew: a stew made with a torchflower gives 5 seconds of Night Vision - craft it or feed the flower to a brown mooshroom and milk it with a bowl.
  8. Attract bees: torchflowers pollinate bee nests and hives, and oak, birch or cherry saplings grown within 2 blocks have a 5% chance to sprout a bee nest with 2-3 bees.

Java vs Bedrock

Behavior is the same in Java and Bedrock - both grow, harvest and brew identically. One Java-only curiosity: endermen can pick up torchflowers like other one-block flowers and drop them when killed.

Versions: Added in 1.20 Trails & Tales - first behind the Update 1.20 experimental pack in 23w07a, fully available and renewable from 23w12a, together with the sniffer.

Frequently asked questions

How do you get torchflower seeds in Minecraft?

Only from a sniffer: adult sniffers periodically dig the ground and unearth torchflower seeds or pitcher pods. Get your first sniffer by brushing suspicious sand in warm ocean ruins for a sniffer egg.

Can you bonemeal torchflowers in Minecraft?

Bone meal works on the growing crop, but unlike most flowers you cannot duplicate a placed torchflower with bone meal. The renewable loop is seeds from sniffers, not flower duplication.

What is the torchflower used for in Minecraft?

Orange dye, breeding sniffers (two fed seeds produce an egg), suspicious stew with Night Vision, bee pollination and decoration - it also pots like any small flower.
