How to Make a Campfire in Minecraft
Guide Java Bedrock
Quick answer: Craft 1 campfire with 3 sticks, 1 coal or charcoal, and 3 logs or wood-family blocks. Put a stick at top-center, stick-coal-stick across the middle, and the 3 logs across the bottom. It cooks up to 4 food items at once without fuel and gives light level 15.
What you need
- 3 sticks
- 1 coal or charcoal
- 3 logs, stems, wood or hyphae (any type)
- Crafting table
- Optional: hay bale for a taller smoke signal
Step by step
- Gather 3 sticks, 1 coal or charcoal, and 3 logs, stems, wood or hyphae. Stripped variants work too. Use a crafting table for the 3x3 recipe.
- Craft the campfire: a stick in the top center, stick-coal-stick across the middle row, and three logs along the bottom row (3 sticks, 1 coal or charcoal, 3 logs, stripped or wood variants included).
- Cook on it: use a food item on a lit campfire. Up to 4 items cook at once and no fuel is needed. Each takes 30 seconds (600 ticks), against 10 seconds in a furnace.
- For harvesting honey, put the lit campfire directly below the nest or hive, within 5 blocks, with an unobstructed smoke path. Keep bees out of the flames. A carpet over the campfire lets smoke calm bees in Java, but blocks that calming effect in Bedrock.
- Make a smoke signal: smoke rises around 10 blocks. With a hay bale below, it floats up 24 blocks.
- It is lit when placed. Relight with flint and steel, a fire charge or a flaming arrow. Put it out with a shovel, a splash water bottle or by waterlogging it. Rain does not extinguish it.
- Careful: a lit campfire damages mobs and players standing on it, but does not set them on fire. Mining it drops 2 charcoal, or the campfire itself with Silk Touch.
Java vs Bedrock
Java: pistons do not interact with campfires. Bedrock: a piston push breaks a campfire (2 charcoal), campfires can also be lit with Fire Aspect, and they can also be put out by water placed above them.
