How to Make a Door in Minecraft
Guide Java Bedrock
What you need
- 6 matching planks (any wood) OR 6 iron ingots
- Makes 3 doors
Step by step
- Turn logs into 6 planks of one wood type (or smelt 6 iron ingots).
- Open a crafting table.
- Fill the left and middle columns completely with the 6 planks or iron ingots.
- Take the 3 doors from the output slot.
- Place a door on top of a solid block in a doorway; it must sit on a full block face.
- Wooden doors open by hand or redstone; iron doors need a button, lever or pressure plate.
Java vs Bedrock
The door recipe gives 3 doors in both Java and Bedrock, and every wood type (including Nether and pale oak) has its own door texture; copper doors also exist and oxidize like other copper blocks. Wooden doors open by hand and can be used by villagers and piglins, while iron doors need redstone power. On Hard difficulty zombies can break wooden doors down, so iron doors or a raised entrance protect a base at night. Doors also create air pockets underwater, which saves you while mining on the ocean floor.

Frequently asked questions
How do you open an iron door in Minecraft?
Only with a redstone signal: a button, lever, pressure plate or tripwire placed next to it. Your hand does nothing, which is exactly why iron doors keep mobs (and other players) out.
Can zombies break doors?
On Hard difficulty, zombies and their variants can smash wooden doors. On Normal they only bang on them. Iron doors and doors placed sideways so 'closed' blocks the doorway are safe.
Do doors work underwater?
Yes. Placing a door underwater makes a permanent air pocket around it where you can breathe, a classic trick for long underwater mining sessions in Java and Bedrock.
