How to Make a Minecart in Minecraft
Guide Java Bedrock
What you need
- 5 iron ingots
Step by step
- Smelt 5 iron ingots from iron ore.
- Open the crafting table.
- Place 1 iron ingot in the middle-left and 1 in the middle-right.
- Fill the bottom row with the other 3 ingots.
- Take the minecart.
- Place it on a rail and right-click to ride. For utility carts, craft it together with a chest, hopper, furnace, or TNT block.
Java vs Bedrock
The minecart recipe is the same in Java and Bedrock. Top speed on flat powered track is 8 blocks per second, about sprint speed, so railways beat walking but not elytra. Minecart variants: chest carts haul items, hopper carts vacuum drops through the block above them (the standard farm unloader), furnace carts push other carts (Java), and TNT carts explode on activator rails. Ramming mobs or villagers with a cart makes them ride it, the classic way to move them along tracks.

Frequently asked questions
How do you ride a minecart in Minecraft?
Place the minecart on a rail and right-click it to get in. Push off from a slope or use powered rails to get moving; press forward to nudge it along, and sneak or break the cart to get out.
How do you make a minecart with a chest?
Craft a minecart together with a chest anywhere in the grid. The same pattern works with a hopper, furnace, or TNT for those variants.
Why is my minecart so slow?
Plain rails do not push carts; without powered rails a cart on flat ground coasts to a stop. Place powered rails regularly (one every 38 normal rails keeps top speed on flat track) and power them with a torch or lever.
Can a minecart go uphill?
Yes, with powered rails on the slope. Unpowered uphill track stalls the cart and rolls it back down.
