How to Make a Redstone Torch in Minecraft

Guide Java Bedrock

Quick answer: Craft a redstone torch with 1 redstone dust directly above 1 stick. It outputs constant power, inverts signals when attached to a powered block, and is the core ingredient for repeaters, comparators, and activator rails.

What you need

1 redstone dust
1 stick

Step by step

Mine redstone ore deep underground (below Y=16) for redstone dust.
Craft sticks from planks.
Open the crafting table or your 2x2 inventory grid.
Place 1 redstone dust in the slot directly above 1 stick.
Take the redstone torch.
Place it on the side or top of a block: it powers adjacent components and strongly powers the block above it.

Java vs Bedrock

The redstone torch recipe is the same in Java and Bedrock. Its signature trick is inversion: a torch attached to a block turns off while that block receives power, which builds NOT gates, clocks, and hidden door wiring. Flicker a torch too fast (an 8-tick on-off loop) and it burns out temporarily. Redstone torches give off dim light level 7, enough to see by but not enough to stop mobs from spawning.

Frequently asked questions

What does a redstone torch do in Minecraft?

It provides constant redstone power to adjacent dust and components, strongly powers the block above it, and switches off when its attachment block is powered, making it the basic inverter of redstone logic.

Why did my redstone torch turn off?

Either the block it is attached to is receiving power (normal inversion), or it burned out from toggling too fast. A burned-out torch recovers on its own after a short rest.

Do redstone torches stop mobs from spawning?

No. They only emit light level 7, below the mob-proofing threshold. Use normal torches, lanterns, or other bright lights for spawn-proofing.

What is crafted with redstone torches?

Redstone repeaters, redstone comparators, and activator rails all need redstone torches, so a stack of them is standard redstone kit.
