How to Make Blaze Powder in Minecraft

Guide Java Bedrock

Quick answer: Put 1 blaze rod anywhere in the crafting grid to get 2 blaze powder. Blaze rods drop from blazes, which spawn in Nether fortresses, often from spawners inside them.

What you need

Blaze rods (from blazes in Nether fortresses)
Any crafting grid (2x2 works)

Step by step

Build a Nether portal and enter the Nether with iron armor or better and a shield.
Find a Nether fortress: the long dark-brick structures. They generate in strips along the east-west axis, so travel north or south to bump into one.
Locate blazes: they spawn around the fortress and from blaze spawners, usually in open-air rooms with fences or small enclosed rooms.
Kill blazes until you have the rods you need. Each blaze drops 0-1 blaze rods (more with Looting); snowballs hurt them, and fire resistance potions make the farm safe.
Place 1 blaze rod in any crafting slot to get 2 blaze powder. No crafting table needed; the 2x2 inventory grid works.
Use it: blaze powder fuels brewing stands (each powder lasts 20 operations), combines with an ender pearl into an eye of ender, with a slimeball into magma cream, and with coal and gunpowder into fire charges.

Java vs Bedrock

The recipe and uses are the same in Java and Bedrock. In both editions one blaze rod always yields exactly 2 blaze powder, shapeless.

Versions: 1.0 (added with brewing)

Frequently asked questions

Can you get blaze powder without going to the Nether?

No reliable way: blaze powder only comes from blaze rods, and blaze rods only come from blazes, which only spawn in Nether fortresses.

How many blaze powders does a brewing stand use?

Each blaze powder placed as fuel powers 20 brewing operations, and a stand holds up to 20 powder at once.

What is the fastest way to farm blaze rods?

Find a blaze spawner inside a fortress, build a safe platform, and use a fire resistance potion plus a Looting III sword. Snowballs also work: they damage blazes and stack.

What do you need blaze powder for to beat the game?

Two things: brewing strength potions (optional but standard) and crafting eyes of ender (blaze powder + ender pearl), which are required to find and open the End portal.
