How to Make Bread in Minecraft

Guide Java Bedrock

Quick answer: Craft bread from wheat. It restores 5 hunger and 6 saturation, takes 1.6 seconds to eat, stacks to 64 and is renewable. Villagers need 3 bread to become willing to breed.

What you need

Step by step

  1. Craft the bread: 3 wheat in a row.
  2. Eat it: bread restores 5 hunger and 6 saturation, and eating takes 32 game ticks (1.6 seconds).
  3. Loot it: bread is in monster room chests (34.1%), mineshaft chests (38.7%), stronghold storeroom chests (47.5%) and many village chests (for example plains house 74.2%, desert house 80.6%, temple 89.3%).
  4. Breed villagers: a villager picks up bread to become willing to breed, and needs 3 bread.
  5. Farmer villagers can craft bread from wheat they harvest and trade it. In Java they may throw bread at you under Hero of the Village.
  6. Do not compost bread if you can compost wheat: bread has an 85% chance to raise the compost level, and wheat is more efficient.

Java vs Bedrock

Eating bread also gives a Java-only saturation boost (heals 4HP, duration 2 seconds). Farmers throwing bread under Hero of the Village is Java only.
