How to Make a Copper Bulb in Minecraft (1.21)

Guide Java Bedrock

Quick answer: Craft 4 copper bulbs with 3 matching copper blocks, 1 blaze rod and 1 redstone dust. Each redstone pulse toggles it on or off - no constant power needed - and oxidation dims it from 15 down to 4.

What you need

Step by step

  1. Gather 3 copper blocks of the same oxidation stage (waxed versions work too), 1 blaze rod and 1 redstone dust.
  2. Craft the bulbs: copper blocks in the middle of each side, blaze rod in the center, redstone dust below it - one craft gives 4 copper bulbs.
  3. Mine them right: copper bulbs drop only with a stone pickaxe or better.
  4. Pulse to toggle: a single redstone pulse flips the bulb on or off and it STAYS that way - buttons and observers beat levers here, no continuous power required.
  5. Read the brightness: light level depends on oxidation - 15 fresh, 12 exposed, 8 weathered, 4 fully oxidized. The weathered stage was the first survival light-8 block ever.
  6. Wax to freeze: apply honeycomb to lock the bulb at its current stage - waxed bulbs keep their brightness forever.
  7. Scrape to restore: use an axe on an oxidized bulb to strip oxidation back one stage and recover light.
  8. Build smart circuits: toggle behavior makes bulbs perfect flip-flops - one input pulse per state change, ideal for secret doors and compact memory.

Java vs Bedrock

Recipe, toggle behavior and oxidation light levels are the same in Java and Bedrock.

Versions: Revealed at Minecraft Live on October 15, 2023; added experimentally in 1.20.3 (23w43a) and fully released in 1.21. Weathered copper bulbs (light 8) were a first for survival.

Frequently asked questions

How do copper bulbs work in Minecraft?

They are light blocks with a flip-flop: each redstone pulse toggles them on or off and they keep that state without power. Their brightness depends on oxidation - 15, 12, 8 or 4 as they age - and waxing freezes both the look and the light level.

Do copper bulbs need constant redstone power?

No - that is their special trait. One pulse turns them on, another turns them off. They are ideal for builds where a lever's constant power would be awkward.

Can you stop a copper bulb from oxidizing?

Yes: right-click it with a honeycomb to wax it at its current stage. Waxing preserves its light level permanently, and an axe scrapes oxidation off unwaxed bulbs one stage at a time.
