How to Make a Hanging Sign in Minecraft

Guide Java Bedrock

Quick answer: Craft 2 iron chains + 6 matching stripped logs (or stripped stems, or blocks of stripped bamboo) for 6 hanging signs. They hang from the underside of blocks or the side of posts, and like normal signs they take dye, glow ink and wax.

What you need

6 matching stripped logs, stripped stems or blocks of stripped bamboo per 6 signs
2 iron chains per batch (each chain = 1 iron ingot + 2 iron nuggets)
Optional: dye, glow ink sac, honeycomb

Step by step

Strip 6 logs with an axe (right-click) - one wood type per batch. Nether stems and bamboo blocks work too.
Craft 2 iron chains: 2 iron nuggets + 1 iron ingot each.
Craft: chains in the top-left and top-right slots, the 6 stripped logs filling the bottom two rows = 6 hanging signs.
Hang it from the underside of almost any block; on the side of a block it mounts with a bracket instead of chains.
Write on both faces, then customize exactly like a sign: dye for color, glow ink sac for glowing text, honeycomb to wax it shut.
Use hanging signs as waypoints over paths - the text is readable from much further than a standing sign on a busy route.

Java vs Bedrock

Identical in Java and Bedrock, including the 6-sign yield and all wood variants. Every wood type has its hanging sign, including the newer pale oak and poplar variants. Edit behavior matches normal signs: waxed hanging signs lock their text.

Versions: Added in 1.20 (Trails & Tales) alongside the rest of the sign overhaul - editing, back-face text and waxing all apply to hanging signs from day one.

Frequently asked questions

How many hanging signs do you get per craft?

6, from 2 chains and 6 stripped logs - the same logs that would make only 3 standing signs worth of planks, so hanging signs are surprisingly cheap per sign.

Can hanging signs glow and be waxed?

Yes, everything a normal sign does: dye colors the text, glow ink sacs make it glow, and honeycomb waxes it permanently. The hanging sign text glow works on both faces.

What can a hanging sign attach to?

The underside of most solid blocks, where it dangles from chains, or the side of a block, where it mounts on a wooden bracket. Fences, walls and other signs also accept side-mounted hanging signs.
