How to Make an Iron Golem in Minecraft
Guide Java Bedrock
What you need
- 4 blocks of iron (36 iron ingots)
- 1 carved pumpkin or jack o'lantern
- Shears if carving a pumpkin (2 extra iron ingots)
- 1 torch if crafting a jack o'lantern
Step by step
- Craft 4 blocks of iron: each block uses 9 iron ingots filling all 9 slots of a crafting table, so you need 36 ingots for the body.
- Get a carved pumpkin by using shears on a pumpkin. To craft shears, place 2 iron ingots diagonally in a 2×2 area (one top-right and one bottom-left). Alternatively, craft 1 jack o'lantern by placing 1 carved pumpkin directly above 1 torch.
- Build the body upright: place 1 iron block as the stem, then 3 iron blocks in a row above it, with the middle block directly over the stem.
- Leave the four corner spaces empty: above and below each outer iron block must be air. Remove grass, flowers, snow layers, water and any other blocks from those spaces.
- Place the carved pumpkin or jack o'lantern on top of the middle upper iron block last. A dispenser can also place it. Alternatively, build with an uncarved pumpkin and use shears on that pumpkin to create the golem.
- The golem appears with 100 HP. A player-built golem never directly attacks players. It attacks many hostile mobs, but not creepers; do not rely on it for creeper protection.
- To heal a damaged golem, use an iron ingot on it: each ingot restores 25 HP and is consumed. Cracks become more severe below 75%, 50% and 25% health. You can attach a lead to move the golem.
Java vs Bedrock
The same 4-block T and carved pumpkin or jack o'lantern work in Java and Bedrock. The four corner spaces must be air. Villager-generated golems use different spawning rules by edition; manually building a golem does not require villagers, beds or workstations.
Versions: Describes the current Java and Bedrock releases. See the edition note above for differences.
Frequently asked questions
Why won't my iron golem spawn?
Use exactly 4 iron blocks in a T and place a carved pumpkin or jack o'lantern last, above the middle upper block. The spaces above and below each arm must be air: even grass, flowers, snow layers or water stop the build from working. If using an uncarved pumpkin, use shears on it after assembling the structure.
Will a golem I build attack me?
No. A player-built iron golem is passive toward players and never directly attacks you. It attacks hostile mobs. Naturally spawned golems are neutral and retaliate if attacked, and are hostile to players with low village popularity.
How do I heal an iron golem?
Use an iron ingot on it. Each ingot heals 25 HP and is consumed.
How much iron does an iron golem cost?
The body needs 36 iron ingots, crafted into 4 blocks of iron. If you also need to craft shears, budget 2 more ingots, for 38 total. The pumpkin is an additional item.
