How to Make a Potion of Fire Resistance in Minecraft
Guide Java Bedrock
What you need
- Brewing stand + blaze powder fuel
- Nether wart + water bottles (for awkward potions)
- magma cream
- Redstone dust (optional, longer duration)
- Gunpowder / dragon's breath (optional, splash and lingering)
Step by step
- Set up a brewing stand and fuel it with blaze powder.
- Brew water bottles with nether wart to make awkward potions, the base for almost every potion.
- Place up to 3 awkward potions in the bottom slots of the brewing stand.
- Put the magma cream in the ingredient slot on top.
- Wait 20 seconds. You now have potions of Fire Resistance that last 3 minutes.
- Optional: add redstone dust to extend the duration to 8 minutes.
- Optional: add gunpowder for splash potions, then dragon's breath for lingering potions, which also craft tipped arrows.
Java vs Bedrock
Fire Resistance works the same in Java and Bedrock: full immunity to fire, lava, magma blocks, blaze fireballs and even small fireball and flaming arrow damage. It is the essential potion for Nether trips, ancient debris mining and wither fights. There is no level II version.

Frequently asked questions
How long does Fire Resistance last?
The base potion lasts 3 minutes. Adding redstone dust extends it to 8 minutes. There is no Fire Resistance II.
How do you get magma cream?
Craft it from blaze powder plus slimeball, or loot it from bastion remnant chests. Magma cubes in the Nether also drop it.
Does Fire Resistance protect you from lava?
Yes. With the effect active you take no damage from fire, lava, magma blocks or blaze fireballs. You still need to watch your oxygen if you swim in lava, since you cannot see well through it.
