How to Make a Potion of Regeneration in Minecraft

Guide Java Bedrock

Quick answer: Brew a potion of Regeneration by adding a ghast tear to an awkward potion in a brewing stand. It steadily restores health for 45 seconds, extendable to 1 minute 30 seconds with redstone dust or boosted to Regeneration II with glowstone dust.

What you need

Brewing stand + blaze powder fuel
Nether wart + water bottles (for awkward potions)
1 ghast tear (from ghasts in the Nether)
Redstone dust or glowstone dust (optional modifiers)

Step by step

Set up a brewing stand and fuel it with blaze powder.
Brew water bottles with nether wart to make awkward potions, the base for almost every potion.
Get a ghast tear by killing ghasts in the Nether. Aim for ones over land so the tear does not fall into lava.
Place up to 3 awkward potions in the bottom slots of the brewing stand.
Put the ghast tear in the ingredient slot on top.
Wait 20 seconds. You now have potions of Regeneration that restore health over 45 seconds.
Optional: add redstone dust to extend the effect to 1 minute 30 seconds, or glowstone dust for Regeneration II, which heals faster for 22 seconds.

Java vs Bedrock

Regeneration steadily restores health: level I heals over 0:45, the redstone-extended version lasts 1:30 in Java and 2:00 in Bedrock and heals more total health, while Regeneration II heals faster for a shorter time. Undead mobs (zombies, skeletons, the wither) are unaffected by Regeneration, so do not splash it at them.

Frequently asked questions

How long does Regeneration last?

The base potion lasts 45 seconds. Redstone extends it to 1 minute 30 seconds, and glowstone turns it into Regeneration II, which heals faster for 22 seconds.

Is Regeneration I extended or II better?

Extended Regeneration I restores more total health overall, while Regeneration II heals much faster for a shorter time. For boss fights where you are taking steady damage, II is the safer panic button.

How do you get ghast tears?

Kill ghasts in the Nether. They drop 0-1 tears, more with the Looting enchantment. Fight them over netherrack, not lava, or the tear burns up.
