How to Make a Potion of Slow Falling in Minecraft

Guide Java Bedrock

Quick answer: Brew a potion of Slow Falling by adding a phantom membrane to an awkward potion in a brewing stand. It makes you fall slowly and take no fall damage for 1 minute 30 seconds, extendable to 4 minutes with redstone dust.

What you need

Brewing stand + blaze powder fuel
Nether wart + water bottles (for awkward potions)
phantom membrane
Redstone dust (optional, longer duration)
Gunpowder / dragon's breath (optional, splash and lingering)

Step by step

Set up a brewing stand and fuel it with blaze powder.
Brew water bottles with nether wart to make awkward potions, the base for almost every potion.
Place up to 3 awkward potions in the bottom slots of the brewing stand.
Put the phantom membrane in the ingredient slot on top.
Wait 20 seconds. You now have potions of Slow Falling that last 1 minute 30 seconds.
Optional: add redstone dust to extend the duration to 4 minutes.
Optional: add gunpowder for splash potions, then dragon's breath for lingering potions, which also craft tipped arrows.

Java vs Bedrock

Slow Falling works the same in Java and Bedrock: you descend gently and land without any fall damage. It is the star potion for the ender dragon fight (safe pillar descents and knockback saves), end city raids and big builds. There is no level II version. There is no Slow Falling II - glowstone does nothing to this potion - and the effect also blocks critical hits and mace smash attacks while it lasts.

Frequently asked questions

How long does Slow Falling last?

The base potion lasts 1 minute 30 seconds. Adding redstone dust extends it to 4 minutes. There is no Slow Falling II.

How do you get a phantom membrane?

Phantoms drop membranes when killed. Phantoms spawn at night above players who have not slept for several in-game days, so stay awake a few nights and hunt them in the morning.

Does Slow Falling cancel all fall damage?

Yes. While the effect is active you take zero fall damage no matter the height, and you drift down slowly. It also works on farm animals and pets hit with the splash version.
