How to Make a Sticky Piston in Minecraft

Guide Java Bedrock

Quick answer: Craft a sticky piston with 1 slimeball above 1 piston. It behaves like a normal piston, except that when it retracts it also pulls the block attached to its head. A sticky piston pulls when it is unpowered.

What you need

Step by step

  1. Craft a piston first: 3 planks across the top, cobblestone on the left and right of the middle and bottom rows, an iron ingot in the center and redstone dust below it.
  2. Craft the sticky piston: 1 slimeball directly above the piston.
  3. Power it to extend like a normal piston. When it loses power it retracts and pulls the block attached to its head. It also pulls blocks attached through slime blocks or honey blocks, but not other blocks it pushed.
  4. It has the same push limits as a normal piston. If it cannot pull a block, it retracts without it. It cannot pull a falling block.
  5. Java only: if it loses power before finishing its extension while pushing blocks, the first block ends up in its final position and the piston starts retracting. It is also called block dropping or block spitting.
  6. Bedrock: the start delay is fixed at 1 redstone tick (2 game ticks, 0.1 seconds), and it only activates on the input redstone tick.
  7. Break it with any tool. It always drops itself, and a pickaxe is faster in Java.
  8. Find them: 3 generate in each jungle pyramid and 5 in each ancient city.

Java vs Bedrock

Block dropping works only in Java. In Bedrock the start delay is fixed at 1 redstone tick and the piston activates only on the input redstone tick.
