How to Make Sugar in Minecraft

Guide Java Bedrock

Quick answer: Craft sugar by placing 1 sugar cane anywhere in the crafting grid: each cane makes 1 sugar, no crafting table needed. A honey bottle makes 3 sugar and returns the empty bottle.

What you need

1 sugar cane (makes 1 sugar) OR 1 honey bottle (makes 3 sugar)

Step by step

Find sugar cane growing on sand, grass or dirt next to water along rivers and beaches.
Punch the cane: breaking one block drops every piece above it.
Open your 2x2 inventory grid (or a crafting table).
Place 1 sugar cane anywhere in the grid.
Take the sugar: 1 cane makes 1 sugar.
Alternative: 1 honey bottle makes 3 sugar and leaves the empty glass bottle behind.

Java vs Bedrock

The sugar recipe is shapeless and identical in Java and Bedrock. Sugar is a brewing and baking staple: it goes into cake, pumpkin pie and cookies, brews the Potion of Swiftness, feeds horses for faster growth and taming, and trades to wandering traders. Sugar cane itself is the real farm: plant it on sand, grass, dirt or mud directly touching water and it grows up to 3 blocks tall, and an observer-plus-piston farm harvests it automatically. Honey bottles are the better sugar source once you have a bee farm: 3 sugar per bottle, with the bottle refunded.

Frequently asked questions

How do you grow sugar cane in Minecraft?

Plant sugar cane on sand, grass, dirt, podzol or mud directly adjacent to a water block. It grows up to 3 blocks tall on its own, needs no light level beyond spawning rules, and bone meal works on it only in Bedrock. Harvest the top two blocks and leave the bottom to regrow.

Can you make sugar from honey?

Yes. One honey bottle crafts into 3 sugar, and the empty glass bottle stays in the grid for reuse. Use shears on a full bee nest or hive for honeycomb, or a glass bottle for honey bottles, with a campfire underneath to keep the bees calm.

What is sugar used for in Minecraft?

Cake, pumpkin pie and cookies; brewing Potions of Swiftness (sugar + awkward potion); feeding horses, donkeys and mules to speed up growth and taming; and trades with wandering traders. It is also compostable.
