How to Set Your Spawn Point in Minecraft

Guide Java Bedrock

Quick answer: Sleep in a bed (Overworld) or click a charged respawn anchor (Nether) to set your respawn point. With cheats, /spawnpoint sets it exactly where you stand. Without any of these you respawn at world spawn.

What you need

Step by step

  1. Overworld: place a bed and sleep in it (right-click it; you can only fall asleep at night or in a thunderstorm, but in Java 1.15 and later right-clicking by day still sets your spawn). The chat confirms 'Respawn point set'.
  2. Your bed spawn stays until the bed is broken or blocked - then you respawn at world spawn with a 'bed missing or obstructed' message.
  3. Nether: beds explode there. Use a respawn anchor instead: craft it with 6 crying obsidian + 3 glowstone, place it and charge it with glowstone blocks (up to 4 charges).
  4. Click the charged anchor to set your Nether spawn. Each death uses one charge - recharge with more glowstone.
  5. With cheats: /spawnpoint sets your spawn exactly where you stand, in any dimension. /spawnpoint @p X Y Z sets precise coordinates.
  6. World spawn itself only moves with /setworldspawn (cheats) - useful for server lobbies and adventure maps.

Java vs Bedrock

Beds set spawns identically on Java and Bedrock. Respawn anchors exist on both editions too - just never right-click a bed in the Nether or the End.

Versions: Respawn anchors were added in 1.16 (Nether Update) and work the same in all current versions.

Frequently asked questions

Why did I respawn at world spawn?

Your bed was broken or blocked, or your respawn anchor ran out of charges. The death message tells you which one happened.

Can I have spawns in several places?

Only one personal respawn point at a time - the last bed slept in or anchor clicked wins. Compass plus lodestone helps you navigate between bases.
