Recovery Compass
Utility Stack: 64 Since 1.19 (The Wild Update)
Quick answer: Craft it: 1 compass surrounded by 8 echo shards.
How to get it
- Craft it: 1 compass surrounded by 8 echo shards
- Echo shards come only from ancient city chests in the deep dark - bring wool, crouch a lot, fear the warden
- The compass itself is the easy part: 4 iron ingots + 1 redstone dust
Uses
- Points to your last death location - hold it and follow the needle to recover your dropped items
- Only works for a player who has died before, in the same dimension as the death: in any other case it spins randomly
- Essential for deep dark, Nether roof and end-city corpse runs where coordinates got lost with the death screen
- Useless in hardcore mode - no respawn, no corpse, no point
- It drops like any normal item when you die again (unless keep_inventory is on), so do not die twice on the way back
Renewability
Not renewable: echo shards are finite chest loot, though ancient cities are generous enough that one city usually covers several compasses.
Java vs Bedrock
Same behavior in both editions. Bedrock-only quirks: it can be enchanted, and its needle even works in the crafting-preview menu before you craft it.
