How to get it

- Also found in decorated pots and chests inside trial chambers
- Only trial chambers produce them - find a chamber deep underground (often near the deepslate layers)
Uses
- Unlock a standard vault: use the key on the vault block and it ejects loot - the key is consumed
- Each vault opens once per player (it remembers up to 128 players), so bring friends rather than more keys
- Ominous vaults need the rarer ominous trial key from ominous trial spawners - different key, better loot
- Java quirk (bug MC-268183): a renamed or otherwise modified trial key will not open a vault
Renewability
Renewable: trial spawners reset after a cooldown and can be farmed repeatedly.

Identical in Java and Bedrock, apart from the Java-only renamed-key bug.
