The story
Home of the legendary 404 Challenge. You spawn facing a small gravel hole in a beach: punch one block of gravel, the whole floor collapses, and you fall into a vast dark cave system. The community challenge that grew around it - gather what you can during one day, drop in at night, then survive underground with no torches and no return to the surface - became one of the first great Minecraft survival challenges.
Notes
- The gravel pit at spawn is the entrance: breaking one gravel block collapses the rest into the cave
- Classic rules: one day of surface gathering, then underground forever - no torches allowed
- Works in Beta 1.3 through 1.7.3; later updates changed the terrain and killed the challenge
