Cactus Farm

Beginner Java + Bedrock

Produces: Cactus for green dye and smelting XP (1 XP per smelt in Java, the highest of any farmable block; 0.2 in Bedrock)

Quick answer: Cactus grows on sand with zero light and zero water, and it breaks itself when a block sits next to it - so a fence post at the right height makes every new segment harvest itself. Fully automatic, no bone meal needed (bone meal does not even work on cactus).

How it works

Materials

Build steps

  1. Pick the layout: rows of sand with cactus planted one block apart diagonally (they cannot touch), in a grid as dense as your space allows.
  2. Set the break layer: a fence or string line at the height where the third block would grow - every new segment breaks itself the tick it appears.
  3. Protect the drops: leave a full air gap between the cactus and any water channel or hopper - items that touch a cactus are destroyed.
  4. Collect below: hoppers under the sand rows (or water streams leading to one) feed chests.
  5. Scale wide, not tall: more plants beat more height - each cactus tops out at 3 blocks and only grows on its own random ticks.
  6. Feed the XP bank: pipe cactus into a furnace array with any fuel, let it run, then pull a stack out by hand to cash the stored XP.
  7. Harvest flowers by hand if you want them - the farm's broken growth never gives the plant time to flower anyway.
  8. Go AFK anywhere in range: cactus grows on random ticks in loaded chunks, no player proximity required.

Rates

Each cactus averages one new block every ~18 minutes, so rates scale purely with plant count - a few dozen plants with a furnace array bank noticeable XP per day in Java, plus stacks of green dye.
