Fishing Farm
Beginner Different design per edition
Produces: Fish, enchanted books, enchanted bows and rods, saddles, name tags, nautilus shells and XP
Quick answer: Cast into open water and reel when the bobber dips. Treasure (enchanted books, saddles, name tags) only bites in Java when the bobber floats in true open water - a 5x4x5 clear zone - so a proper fishing hut with sky above catches everything, not just fish.
How it works
- Every cast waits 5-30 seconds for a bite; Lure shaves 5 seconds per level, rain cuts ~20%, and a bobber without sky access takes roughly twice as long - fish in the open, in the rain if you can.
- The loot split without enchantments: 85% fish, 10% junk, 5% treasure - Luck of the Sea raises treasure at the expense of the other two.
- The treasure gate (Java): the 5x4x5 area around the bobber must be open water (only water sources or waterlogged blocks without collision below, air or lily pads above; flowing water does not count) or treasure never appears.
- The reel window: when the bobber dips you have about half a second in Bedrock (1-2 seconds in Java) to reel in before the catch escapes.
- Treasure table: bow, enchanted book, fishing rod, name tag, nautilus shell and saddle (1/6 each). Lily pads are junk, not treasure.
Materials
- A fishing rod - ideally with Lure III and Luck of the Sea III, mended over time
- Open water: at least 5 wide, 4 high, 5 deep of clear water with sky above (Java treasure)
- A roof for yourself only - the bobber needs the sky, you do not
- Chests for the catch and an anvil for combining book loot
Build steps
- Build the rod: 3 sticks + 2 string, then work toward Lure III + Luck of the Sea III via enchanting table, villagers or fishing itself.
- Pick the spot: a lake, ocean or dug pool with a clear 5x4x5 around the bobber and direct sky above - glass roofs count as open.
- Cast and wait: splashes approach the bobber, it dips, you reel - rhythm becomes automatic in a few minutes.
- Fish in the rain when you can: the ~20% speedup is free money.
- Sort the catch: fish to the food chest, enchanted books to the anvil station, junk (string, sticks, leather) to the composter or storage.
- Combine books: fishing throws endless low-level enchanted books at you - merge them on an anvil into the ones you actually want.
- Repair the rod with the XP: every catch gives 1-6 XP, so a mending rod pays its own upkeep while you fish.
- While the open-water rule (Java) is not met you only catch fish and junk, even with Luck of the Sea.
Rates
Output depends on the design, the version and how much of it you build, so we do not quote an hourly figure. Build the layout below, time it for a few minutes in your own world and scale from there.
Tips
- Luck of the Sea first, Lure second - treasure quality beats raw speed until your enchants are set.
- The reel window is about 0.5 s in Bedrock (1-2 s in Java): distracted fishing loses catches.
- Fishing in jungle biomes adds bamboo to the junk table (and cocoa beans in one of the wiki's tables, depending on edition).
- Keep a waterlogged chest or sign near your AFK spot: the open-water check tolerates waterlogged blocks without collision.
