Shulker Farm (Shells)
Advanced Different design per edition
Produces: Shulker shells for shulker boxes - portable chests and the backbone of every big storage system
Quick answer: A shulker hit by another shulker's bullet can duplicate: it teleports away and leaves a new shulker of the same color behind. Trap one in a chamber, let it shoot itself (Java) or feed it bullets, and collect the copies.
How it works
- Duplication rules (Java): the hit must be projectile damage from a shulker bullet (its own counts), the shulker must have its lid open and survive, and a random check must pass: 100% minus 20% per other shulker within 8 blocks (with 5 or more others it can never happen).
- In Bedrock (farmable since 1.19) a shulker killed by a shulker bullet always duplicates.
- Shell drops: Java 50% +6.25% per Looting level (up to 68.75%); Bedrock 0-1 base, +0-1 per Looting level.
- Shulkers never despawn, even on Peaceful - every copy you make is permanent until harvested.
- A shulker teleports when its block stops being air, when it has no full face to attach to, or when its shell cannot open - farm designs use this to push copies into the kill chamber.
- Bullets inflict Levitation for 10 seconds and deal 3, 4 or 6 damage on Easy, Normal and Hard: protect yourself with slow falling or water when landing.
Materials
- One shulker from an End city (rail it home through an End gateway or a very long minecart ride)
- A duplication chamber: open space with attachment faces and a collection spot below
- Rails, minecarts and activator rails for transport
- A Looting III sword and slow-falling potions
- Ender chests and patience - shulker work is endgame work
Build steps
- Ship a shulker from an End city: break it loose, catch it in a minecart and ride the rails to your End-side farm platform.
- Build the duplication chamber: the shulker sits where its own bullets can arc back and hit it (Java) or where a second shulker's bullets connect.
- Each successful hit teleports the original and spawns a copy where it stood - copies inherit only the color.
- Guide copies down a chute (they teleport when they cannot attach) to a softening drop and a kill floor.
- Finish with a Looting III sword: shells at up to 68.75% per kill on Java.
- Craft shulker boxes: 2 shells + 1 chest - dye them and your storage goes portable.
Rates
Output depends on the design, the version and how much of it you build, so we do not quote an hourly figure. Build the layout below, time it for a few minutes in your own world and scale from there.
Tips
- If the hit leaves health below 50%, there is a 20% chance it teleports away 'for health reasons' and then does not duplicate.
- With 5 or more other shulkers within 8 blocks, duplication is impossible: enlarge the chamber, not the crowd.
- A teleporting shulker tries up to 5 random spots in a 17x17x17 region; many valid spots around it improves the rate.
- Bring slow falling: one stray bullet on an End island platform is otherwise a long float down to the void.
