Villager Breeder
Intermediate Different design per edition
Produces: Baby villagers on demand - the engine behind trading halls, iron farms and raid farms
Quick answer: Villagers breed when they are willing - 12 food points each (3 bread or 12 carrots/potatoes) - and there is an unclaimed bed with two blocks of air above it for the baby. Feed two villagers in a cell full of beds and the babies keep coming.
How it works
- Willingness is food: a villager breeds when it holds 12 food points - bread counts 4 (3 loaves), carrots, potatoes and beetroots count 1 (12 vegetables). They eat only when about to breed.
- Beds set the cap: villagers breed only while unclaimed beds remain in range - beds need two empty blocks above them to count for a baby.
- Java checks a 48-block radius for a pathfindable unclaimed bed and shows angry particles when none is found; Bedrock runs a village census instead - cell designs differ, food rules match.
- The self-feeding design: a farmer villager working a carrot or potato plot harvests and throws food to the breeder pair - no manual feeding after setup.
- Babies take 20 minutes to grow and claim their own bed immediately - move them out (water streams or minecart) so the beds free up.
Materials
- 2 villagers (boat or minecart them home from the nearest village)
- Beds - one per breeder plus one per baby you want queued
- A farmer villager + composter, and a carrot or potato plot (self-feeding design)
- Building blocks for the cells
- Water channels or rails to ship babies to the trading hall
Build steps
- Import two villagers: kidnap by boat at night when they sleep - a boat parked at the bed traps them.
- Build the breeder cell: a small room with the pair, and a second chamber stacked with beds - two air blocks above each pillow.
- Feed them: throw 3 bread or 12 carrots to each until hearts appear - or install the farmer and plot and let him cater.
- Collect the babies: a water stream or drop chute under the cell pushes babies out to a holding pen, freeing beds for the next round.
- Assign professions later: babies grow up unemployed - place a workstation in front of one to pick its job, and break it to reroll trades before the first deal.
- Never trade until the trade you want shows: trading locks the profession and offers forever.
- Scale the pipeline: babies to trading hall cells, extras to the iron farm pods, heroes to the raid farm.
- Keep zombies away: one zombie in the cell turns your breeder into an infection ward - light and fence everything.
Rates
A fed pair with free beds produces a baby roughly every few minutes; a farmer-fed breeder runs hands-off, filling a 20-cell trading hall in a couple of in-game days.
Tips
- Throw food on the ground - villagers pick it up themselves; no GUI needed.
- The 48-block bed check in Java means beds can sit far below the pair: stack the nursery under the breeder.
- Nitwits happen (10% in Bedrock) - they still count for iron farm populations.
- Cured zombie villagers breed too, and their babies inherit nothing of the discount - the discount is yours, not hereditary.
