Minecraft Fishing Loot Table: Every Catch with Chances

Guide Java Bedrock

Quick answer: With default loot tables and no Luck of the Sea, successful catches are 85% fish, 10% junk and 5% treasure. At Luck of the Sea III, treasure is about 11.34%. Java requires qualifying open water for treasure; Bedrock does not, and individual item weights differ. These are per-catch probabilities, not guaranteed results per cast or minute.

What you need

Step by step

  1. Category chances: 85% fish, 10% junk, 5% treasure unenchanted. Each level of Luck of the Sea shifts about 1-2% from junk and fish into treasure - with LotS III it is 84.5% fish, 4.1% junk, 11.3% treasure.
  2. Fish catches (Java): raw cod 60% of the category (51% per successful catch), raw salmon 25% (21.25%), pufferfish 13% (11.05%), tropical fish 2% (1.7%).
  3. Treasure catches: enchanted book, enchanted bow, enchanted fishing rod, name tag, nautilus shell and saddle - 16.67% of the treasure category each in Java (0.83% per successful catch unenchanted, 1.89% with LotS III). In Bedrock the enchanted book is slightly more common (19.35% of treasure).
  4. Caught bows and rods come enchanted as if from a level-30 enchanting table with 0-25% durability left; books can hold any enchantment except Swift Sneak, Soul Speed and Wind Burst.
  5. Junk catches: lily pads (1.7% per successful catch), bones, bowls, leather, leather boots, rotten flesh, tripwire hooks and water bottles (1% each), sticks and string (0.5%), unenchanted fishing rods (0.2%) and 10 ink sacs (0.1%).
  6. Jungle rule: fishing in jungle, sparse jungle or bamboo jungle adds bamboo to the junk table (Bedrock also adds cocoa beans and boosts salmon); fish and treasure chances stay the same.
  7. Java treasure requires a qualifying 5×4×5 volume around the bobber: layers of water sources or non-colliding waterlogged blocks below, and air/lily pads above. No flowing water or obstructing solids in that volume. A three-block-deep pool helps keep the check valid as the bobber dips. Direct sky affects speed, not a separate treasure requirement. Bedrock has no open-water treasure check.
  8. Speed: a catch takes 5-30 seconds; each Lure level cuts 5 seconds, rain speeds the timer by about 20%, and a covered sky above the bobber roughly doubles the wait.
  9. With Luck of the Sea III, 11.34% treasure corresponds to a long-run average of about 8.8 successful catches per treasure, not a guarantee. Lure and rain can shorten time between catches; they do not increase that per-catch percentage.

Java vs Bedrock

Java treasure has six equally weighted entries; Bedrock gives enchanted books slightly more weight than the other treasure entries. Java also requires open water. Small AFK farms may therefore produce fish and junk but no treasure in Java.

Frequently asked questions

What can you catch fishing in Minecraft?

Fish (cod, salmon, pufferfish, tropical fish), treasure (enchanted books, enchanted bows and rods, name tags, nautilus shells, saddles) and junk (lily pads, bones, bowls, leather, bottles and more). Unenchanted, the split is 85% fish, 10% junk, 5% treasure.

What is the chance of an enchanted book from fishing?

About 0.83% per successful catch unenchanted in Java, rising to 1.89% with Luck of the Sea III - roughly one book every 53 successful catches with the best rod. In Bedrock it is slightly higher: 0.97% to 2.19%.

Why am I not catching treasure?

Java requires the qualifying open-water volume around the bobber; invalid water allows fish and junk only. A roof inside the checked volume can invalidate it, but direct sky is not a separate treasure requirement. Bedrock has no open-water check. Treasure is still random when conditions are valid.
